Affirmative Inaction & Economic Opportunity

Article by Stephen Maddox Sr.

The root cause of the gross Economic Inequality in the USA is Greed.

All people are not created financially equal, but since the dawn of time some humans have enjoyed amassing possessions at the expense of others. They like feeling superior to others and having the power which their wealth gives them. To these people, riches equals entitlement.

scales of goldTo the greedy in our nation, the term “Free Enterprise” means the right to get wealth by any means necessary. Having good morals is not a requirement, and often an impediment, to making the most money possible. And that is OK with so many of them.

The popular culture in most countries has always equated wealth with goodness.

Slavers were, and are, introduced as Gentlemen.

Railroad, Banking and Industrial magnates were called “Captains of Industry”.

Now our culture praises the lifestyles of the wealthy without regard for how the riches were acquired.

Many people in the USA now blame the underpaid and poor for causing their own problems and then they restrict or deny these people government benefits and private opportunities.

Those same folks who attack the poor do not ask the wealthy to personally qualify for government benefits which often are packaged as tax breaks, sweetheart contracts, lower interest loans, and special laws passed to favor the growth of their businesses and enable them to buy politicians. They hide behind corporate veils.

Economic Inequality is not going away because Economic Opportunity is limited and controlled by the wealthy. They know they are ahead in the race for assets and they will do anything to stay ahead. In the USA the people most fooled by the wealthy are the non-rich whites who believe that “We The People” includes them. Sorry, you are not rich.
