Our Cowardly Congress leaves our young people unprotected from the whims and insanity of a war loving President.

War usually involves old men sending young men (and now women) to die. When wars are over, those who did the most bleeding are usually the first forgotten.

This nation is currently operating with a voluntary military force. Some people seem to be unaware that the United States Military Draft system, which was created in 1917, is still active.

According to law, a man must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. See https://www.sss.gov/Home/Registration

Also, Immigrant Men (Documented or Undocumented) Between The Ages Of 18 and 25 Are Required to Register. With very few exceptions, all males must register with the Selective Service System (SSS) within 30 days of arriving in the United States. This includes U.S. born and naturalized citizens, parolees, undocumented immigrants, legal permanent residents, asylum seekers, refugees, and all males with visas of any kind which expired more than 30 days ago. The few individuals who are exempt from this requirement are those on current non-immigrant visas.

In every war there are profiteers. Supplying Billions of dollars worth of munitions, supplies, facilities and other services to the military is big business. Often those owning profiteer businesses are exempted from active duty but there are no restrictions on their profits.

The last time the Congress declared war was on December 8, 1941.

That is over 75 years since these elected representatives fulfilled their responsibility under the Constitution (see article 8, Section 8 B). Both Democrats and Republicans have controlled the Congress during these years so neither party is innocent in this matter.

Why is this important?

Without a Congressional Declaration Of War, what protection do our young men have from the whims or insanity of a President?

Multiple Congresses have been funding dozens of military actions by our military personnel in foreign lands for decades without a Declaration Of War. These Congresses have handed their responsibility over to various Presidents.

The underlying reasons for their lack of integrity and abandonment of their Constitutional duty include:

  1. They do not have the integrity and courage to tell their voters and the world what their true judgement position is.
  2. Many Senators and Representatives take Big Donations from War Profiteers
  3. Some get financial “favors” and jobs from the Military/Industrial companies after they leave office.

Back in my old neighborhoods people who betrayed their friends like that would often get their asses kicked.

What can you do about our Cowardly Congress?

I suggest you contact your Senators and Congressional Representatives and ask them to send you a list of their campaign donors who give them more than $5,000. You may be surprised by their refusal to send you that list and/or the “donors” who you find on a list they may send you.

I also suggest that your call and write your Representatives to let them know what you think of the absence of Congressional Declarations of War since 1941.

Silence by citizens on matters such as the draft tells the elected official that you approve of their actions or that you just don’t care.

Remember, however, that it is young people from families like yours which supply the bodies and lives used up by the nation’s Military Machine.

I am a former teacher, marketing representative, labor negotiator and small business owner. As a black man born and raised in New York City I learned how to survive in the "neighborhood" and in business. Hearing about and witnessing the trials, tribulations, hopes and fears of my extended family and the people in their lives helped mold my life. Helping others with their own life journeys is my goal.
